Also, official register of the acts of the Confederate Congress, 1861-1865, giving title and dates of passage and approval of acts of both provisional and permanent congresses; and register of bills and joint resolutions of the Confederate House of Representatives, 1864, showing dates of actions taken, passage, and approval. Miscellaneous items include a petition, 1863, from an unidentified Mississippi planter describing conditions in the delta after the fall of Vicksburg; and a letter, 1865, to William P. Miles, member of Congress, seeking an appointment.

On February 4, 1861, representatives from 6 of the seceded states assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, to organize the Confederate States of America. At this time, the representatives drafted a provisional constitution and declared a provisional legislature. They selected Jefferson Davis to serve as their president. Miles, William Porcher, 1822-1899

William Porcher Miles (1822-1899) was a South Carolina educator, mayor of Charleston, S.C. (1855-1857), United States Representative (1857-1860), member of the Confederate House of Representatives and chair of its Military Affairs Committee. After the Civil War, he was a planter in Virginia, then president of South Carolina College, then a planter again, this time in Louisiana. Miles married Betty Bierne (d. 1874), the daughter of Oliver Bierne, a wealthy Virginia and Louisiana planter, in 1863....
